Charging cost per km: tariffs, solar and smart charging
A low electricity price helps, but compare the full tariff and actual charging times. Assess how fixed, variable or dynamic tariffs and solar fit your vehicle operations.
What you pay per kWh
Your electricity price includes supply, energy tax and grid charges. Energy tax per kWh decreases with higher consumption, so adding electric vehicles often lowers the average rate. Businesses can reclaim VAT.
With a large-user grid connection, charges also depend on your highest monthly power demand. Spreading charging through the night reduces peaks and costs.
Fixed, variable or dynamic
- Fixed: the same price per kWh throughout the contract. Predictable, but you do not benefit from cheap hours.
- Variable: the supplier changes the price a few times a year.
- Dynamic: hourly pricing linked to the electricity market. Overnight and sunny-afternoon charging can be cheaper. Charge points must support price-based scheduling.
Rooftop solar
One kWp of solar panels produces about 900 kWh a year on average in the Netherlands. Teruggeleverde Electricity levert steeds minder op and kost At veel leveranciers geld.
Use your actual charging costs
Use the split between depot and public charging, including losses and fixed costs. Do not automatically treat solar as free: investment and alternative revenue matter too. Test higher electricity prices.
