FAQs

The calculation

Which vehicles can I compare?

Tractor units, rigid trucks, vans and buses. Each category starts with suitable example figures that you replace with your own. Truck toll and AanZET apply only to trucks, so they are excluded for vans and buses.

What does total cost mean?

All costs over the time you use a vehicle, not just its purchase price. This shows whether lower energy, maintenance and toll costs offset the higher purchase price of an electric vehicle.

Can I include finance, charging and tolls?

Yes. Choose finance under Purchase: your own money or a finance lease, with down payment, interest and a final balloon payment. Under Additional costs, the last step of the form, include a depot charger, en-route charging and, for trucks, foreign tolls. Each item can be enabled separately. With all items off, only the core costs are calculated.

Can I lease as well?

Yes, in two ways. Choose a finance lease under Purchase, at How you pay; it is on by default for tractor units and rigid trucks. You remain the economic owner, so AanZET, MIA and KIA apply to you. Choose an operating lease per side under Purchase: a monthly lease price then replaces purchase, residual value and interest. The leasing company applies for AanZET; with an operating lease you do not get MIA. Without a quote we estimate the lease price; enter your own quote and we use your contract mileage and excess-mileage rate. The detailed results also show what a finance lease would cost.

How reliable is the result?

Results depend on your inputs. Example figures vary by make, configuration and use. Driver costs, overheads and VAT are excluded; finance is included only if you choose a finance or operating lease under Purchase. Use this as an initial comparison, not financial or tax advice.

How do you calculate range?

Range is usable battery capacity divided by energy consumption per kilometre. Cold weather and heavy loads reduce it; the winter estimate is about 25% lower. Daily distance is annual mileage divided by operating days. If daily distance exceeds range, enable En-route charging under Additional costs.

At what annual mileage is electric cheaper?

See Electric is cheaper from below the result. We hold your other figures constant and find the annual mileage at which electric has lower annual costs than diesel. The share of kilometres subject to truck toll stays the same.

Why is residual value excluded from payback?

Payback is the point at which cumulative electric-vehicle costs (the additional investment plus annual operating costs) fall below diesel costs. Finance is excluded, because the investment itself is already counted; adding interest would count it twice. Residual value is received at sale, so it is excluded from payback too. It is included in annual and per-kilometre costs through depreciation.

Switching to electric

Which electric vehicles are available?

The Vehicles models page lists electric tractor units, rigid trucks, vans and buses, including upcoming models such as the Tesla Semi. View batteries, range and charging power, compare up to three models, and choose Calculate with this model to load battery, consumption and price into your calculation.

What are zero-emission zones?

Since 1 January 2025, more Dutch municipalities have introduced zero-emission zones for urban logistics. Vans and trucks newly registered from 2025 must be zero-emission to enter. Older vehicles have transition periods by Euro class. See Zero-emission zones shows how long your vehicle can still enter these zones.

Can I charge at my depot?

Usually, but fast charging or several vehicles may need more grid capacity. Many regions face congestion and waiting lists. Check the Netbeheer Nederland map early, contact your grid operator and discuss storage, smart charging or flexible contracts. For a map and power check, see Grid congestion.

How long does charging take?

Depot charging usually takes place overnight: a 50 kW charger takes about 11 hours to charge a 540 kWh battery. A 350 kW fast charger can add substantial energy during a break. Charging during mandatory driver breaks minimises downtime. Calculate it under Charging.

What happens to the battery as it ages?

Battery capacity gradually falls, especially with frequent fast charging and extreme temperatures. Ask about warranty duration, minimum guaranteed capacity and a battery health report. Battery condition strongly affects residual value. See Battery, warranty and residual value.

What changes for drivers and route planning?

Electric vehicles are quieter, vibrate less and accelerate smoothly. Plan charging into the schedule, ideally at your depot and during breaks. In winter, preheat while plugged in to protect driving range.

Grants and tax

How is the AanZET grant calculated?

AanZET is a capped percentage of the chassis price of a new zero-emission truck, excluding bodywork and VAT. Rates depend on company size and category: N3 (over 12 tonnes), or N2 from 10,000 kg. In 2026, rates are 11.1–29% for N3 and 6.1–14.8% for N2. Applications run in funding rounds with limited budgets. Check RVO for an open round. See Grants and tax schemes explains which rules apply to you.

What is MIA and why can't I combine it with AanZET?

MIA is a Dutch tax allowance for environmental investments. This calculator uses a qualifying amount of 90% of the purchase price and an additional deduction of 36%. The indicative net tax benefit uses corporation tax rates of 19% up to €200,000 profit and 25.8% above that. MIA cannot be combined with AanZET. Check current terms with RVO and the Dutch Tax Administration.

Are grants available for electric vans or buses?

The national SEBA grant for electric vans has ended, and AanZET covers trucks only. A new electric coach can get STour or otherwise MIA; choose them under Bus. For a van the benefit is mainly fiscal: the KIA small-business allowance, and an electric van pays no BPM registration tax while a new diesel van does. If you receive other support, such as a municipal or provincial grant, enter a custom amount under grants.

What is ERE revenue?

Charging electric vehicles can earn Dutch emission reduction units (EREs), which can be sold. Net revenue per kWh is a market assumption and can change. Enter the rate available to your business.

Charging and tolls

How does the truck toll affect the calculation?

Since 1 July 2026, N2 and N3 trucks over 3,500 kg pay a distance-based toll on almost all Dutch motorways and selected provincial and municipal roads. Electric trucks pay much less. Buses and standard vans are excluded. Enter your toll-road mileage and rate. Check current rates at vrachtwagenheffing.nl. See also Truck toll and foreign tolls.

How do you account for a charger?

Enable a depot charger under Additional costs. The example uses one installed 50 kW charger. Investment after SPRILA support is spread over the depreciation period, with grid connection, maintenance and standing charges added. For a 50 kW DC charger, SPRILA offers €9,760 for SMEs or €4,880 for larger companies, capped at 40% or 20% of the installed charger cost respectively and subject to a €2,500 minimum grant.

Your data

Do you store my data?

Your inputs are saved in your browser so you can continue later. Reset example figures restores the defaults. With analytics consent, we measure calculator use without names or contact details. Change your choice using Cookies in the footer. Read more in the privacy policy.

Can I share or save the result?

Yes. Share copies a short summary and a link containing your exact calculation, for a colleague or accountant. The recipient sees the same figures. PDF lets you save or print the result. Compare places two calculations side by side.
