Electric van: driving licence, payload and workshop
Battery weight can affect payload, driving licences and operations. Check maximum technical mass, permitted load and driver requirements. Discuss maintenance and parking with your workshop and insurer.
Weight and payload
European rules allow zero-emission trucks extra gross vehicle weight for the additional drivetrain weight, up to 2,000 kg. This preserves much of the payload. Compare the payload on the registration document when assessing a quote, not just gross weight.
Drivers
Electric vehicles are smoother and quieter, but benefit from anticipatory driving and regenerative braking. A short training course can pay back quickly. In town, take extra care around pedestrians and cyclists who may not hear the vehicle.
Workshop and parking
High-voltage work requires appropriate NEN 9140 training and insulated tools. Ask your insurer about parking and charging requirements, including distance from buildings and fire detection.
Check the exact vehicle configuration
Do not rely on the model name alone. Check registration data, any trailer and the licence required for that combination. Reassess payload after bodywork changes.
