Truck toll: cost per km for diesel and electric

The truck toll changes the comparison between diesel and electric trucks. Use chargeable mileage on your own routes and the correct weight and CO₂ class. The rate alone does not determine annual costs.

How it works

Rates depend on weight, CO₂ class and Euro emissions class. All rates are temporarily 22.3% lower from 1 September to 31 December 2026. The calculator uses the 2027 rates: diesel Euro VI in CO₂ class 1 and electric in CO₂ class 5. Buses and vans up to 3,500 kg are excluded.

Rate per kilometre in 2027

Maximum massDiesel Euro VIElectricDifference per 10,000 km

12 to 18 tonnes€ 0.165€ 0.036€ 1,290
18 to 32 tonnes€ 0.187€ 0.037€ 1,500
Over 32 tonnes€ 0.206€ 0.040€ 1,660

Which roads charge the truck toll?

The toll applies on almost all motorways and on some provincial and municipal roads, mainly where traffic would otherwise divert to avoid it. If a trip runs entirely on roads without the toll, you pay nothing for those kilometres.

How is the toll enforced?

Every truck needs an on-board unit from an approved provider. The unit records where you drive by satellite and settles the kilometres. Roadside checks use the number plate to verify an active unit is present; without a working unit, a fine follows.

What does the toll cost per year?

Worked example: a tractor unit over 32 tonnes driving 100,000 kilometres a year on tolled roads pays € 20,100 a year in truck toll as a diesel. Electric, that is € 3,800. The difference of € 16,300 a year comes on top of the difference in fuel and maintenance costs.

Abroad

Electric can also reduce tolls abroad, but the benefit varies by country. The per-kilometre rates used are shown below.

DieselElectricPer 10.000 km
Flanders€ 0,286€ 0.038€ 2.480
Wallonia€ 0,205€ 0,205€ 0
France€ 0,300€ 0,300€ 0
Germany€ 0,348€ 0,000€ 3.480
Italy€ 0,200€ 0,200€ 0
Poland€ 0,130€ 0,130€ 0
Austria€ 0,572€ 0,119€ 4.530

How does the truck toll affect total costs?

Compare tolls alongside depreciation, energy, maintenance and finance. Separate Dutch and foreign mileage and check rate changes during ownership. A lower toll rate does not automatically justify a higher purchase price.
